China Unveils Rules to Govern AI Development

China has beaten the US in the race to govern AI development, unveiling new rules for companies to follow.

AI development is moving at a breakneck pace, worrying some experts. Many have already signed an open letter asking the industry to pause major experiments until guidelines can be established to ensure safe development. The Biden administration has released an AI Bill of Rights blueprint, but it is non-binding.

According to The Independent, Cyberspace Administration of China has already unveiled draft rules to govern AI development:

Companies are expected to ensure that the data used to train the AI models do not discriminate against people on the basis of race, gender, and ethnicity, and they would also be responsible for the legitimacy of the data used to train the algorithm, the new rules noted.

While China may be first out of the gate with such rules, it’s a safe bet other countries will soon implement guidelines of their own.
